Lela London 2016: Year in Review

staycation 2

Best travel blog of 2016…

I started my unexpectedly manic travel year off in Bergen and followed up with trips to Ras al Khaimah, Venice, Florence, Pisa, St Pete, Puerto Vallarta, Belfast (the first of two trips), Birmingham, Lanzarote, Brighton, The Cotswolds, Jerez, St Ives, St Austell (for the Eden Project), The Scilly Isles, Newquay (for Boardmasters Festival), Edinburgh (for Edinburgh Fringe), Antwerp, Ljubljana, Bled, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Indiana, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Minneapolis/The Mall of America, Chicago, Belfast (for the second time), Jersey, and – currently- St Just! The latter four of which have yet to be blogged to completion. How could I possibly choose?!

While I am proud of each and every adventure, I have to highlight two trips for two very specific reasons. Puerto Vallarta (for being a lifelong dream destination and the start of a new obsession with Mexico) and Los Angeles (for securing its spot as my inevitable future home).

Best restaurant of 2016…

High Timber was my immediate instinct and I really don’t think I could trawl through the archives to find anything better. With that said, M Restaurant served up more than a few memorable meals throughout the year that deserve a party popper of their own.

Best surprise of 2016…

…the friendships. I entered the year feeling very, very lucky to have lifelong friends by my side. So much so I almost wrote off the idea of new friends. Which was crazy. Chance encounters led me to the likes of Vicki (the beautiful, hilarious, and empowering sister I’ve always wanted) and Alice (who will forever make me laugh until I cry) – who became part of my accidental, illegitimate family as existing friendships continued to grow in love. I couldn’t be more thankful.

Worst surprise of 2016…

Waking up to discover I had gone completely blind in one eye.

The silver lining? I became more active (two 5ks, canyoning Slovenia’s tallest waterfall, climbing mountains, hiking the Seven Sisters, etc) and more fearless than ever. I even used the experience to snag myself a commercial.

Best personal moment of 2016…

I spent a week being deliriously happy, creating memories with people I adore that money can’t buy, and ended it by watching my best friend get married to the love of her life.

Best recipe of 2016…

I get requests to make/sell my vegan chocolate cake almost weekly. It’s the one.

Best blog of 2016 (miscellaneous)…

I spent a large slice of the year’s ‘personal time’ invested in politics, the economy, and the environment, so my ‘Baby Steps to Sustainability‘ blog can’t be ignored here.

Best Youtube video of 2016…

How To Get An Eating Disorder is definitely the video I’m most proud of. And, ironically, took about two hours less to edit than my typical travel vlogs (ha!).

Best Instagram of 2016…

What’s in store for 2017?

In the hopes of holding myself accountable, this year I plan on getting a book deal, becoming more politically active, selling a documentary/docu-series, and travelling to Japan. Australia and New Zealand.

Might as well shoot for the stars, eh?
