Best of 2012: Blogging, Fashion, Beauty, and Other Fancies

animal attraction dazed confused
It is the last day of 2012 and therefore the last chance I have to offer you my personal notes on the ‘Best of 2012‘. This is a rather eccentric mix of personal and impersonal loves, mon cheres. Enjoy (and tell me yours!)

Best Photo Shoot
For their April issue, Dazed & Confused enlisted the genius of photographer Jeff Bark and stylist Katie Shillingford to tap into the cat craze of the past few years in a whole new way. The result was “Animal Attraction” (full shoot here); kittens, Bette Franke, Balenciaga, bows…adore.

Best Musical
sitr london
Singin’ in The Rain London. It is just incredible.

Best Spot in London
Chiswick. Though not ‘Central’, it became part of Greater London in the 60s and I only managed to have my first proper look-around this month. Definitely on the cards to become the area I buy a home in (its Old English origin translates to “Cheese Farm” – fate for any halloumi addict).

Best Weekend Wonder
audrey hepburn gif
This one by F. Scott Fitzgerald rules my every day.

Best Red Carpet Look
jennifer lawrence hunger games
Jennifer Lawrence at the Hunger Games Premiere in LA. The gold Prabal Gurung gown, the hair, the make-up (which I did a tutorial on) – all so perfect. Solidified Miss Lawrence as my Girlcrush of The Year.

Best Make-up Tutorial
leopard print makeup
The last-minute Halloween Leopard Make-up Tutorial. Lots of you sent me photos of your gorgeous results and it always feels amazing to help!

Best Youtube Video

Though this particular cover video was released in 2011, it gained popularity in 2012 after Anna Kendrick covered the song in the movie Pitch Perfect. “You’re Gonna Miss Me (Cups)” is an incredibly catchy tune by Lulu and the Lampshades and Anna Burden’s version – above – is lovely. I watched it for one hour straight to learn how to ‘play’ the cup.

Best Beauty Product
toni and guy infusion straighteners
African Botanics’ Marula Oil. I use it for EVERYTHING.

Best App
Though Instagram is a very close runner-up, nothing beats Producteev for me. I started using the desktop version earlier in the year as a paper-free way to be obsessive compulsive about productivity and scheduling, but the app takes it to a whole new level. Everything from showers to blog posts are scheduled in this baby.

Best Holiday
Beloved Ones
In May I went back to the homeland (the good ol’ Estados Unidos) for my best friend’s wedding and two stop-overs in New York. It was an emotional and exhausting vacation in the most wonderful ways. I miss everything/everyone!

Best Twitter Moment
The Olympics Opening Ceremony. I have never felt so proud to be British and see everyone else so proud to be British. I must have tweeted over 100 times. It was not dissimilar to being at the world’s most hilarious and sentimental party.

Best Celebrity Couple
Kimye. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West – who today announced that they were having a baby – are a match made in tabloid heaven. Dripping in excess, I can only imagine the ‘Babywatch’ that will go on in 2013 over this pair (and the rush to get Kim divorced, who is technically still married to NBA player Kris Humphries).

Best Life Moment
fashion blog instagram
I got engaged. That was rather spectacular.

Best WTF Moment
The success of 50 Shades of Grey. I mean…what.

Best Remix

The Spectrum (Say My Name) remix by Calvin Harris for Florence + The Machine (listen to it here on Spotify).

Best Movie

Best Outfit Post
neon heels 1
Naturally, the only one shot without a good camera. This is something of a uniform for me and one I will never tire of. Demure top and skirt with ‘boom’ heels.

Best Meal
tom aikens
Tom Aikens. The post speaks for itself.

Best Photoshop Fail
vogue china no leg
Doutzen Kroes in Vogue China lost a leg.

Best Fashion Show

Louise Gray Spring/Summer 2013. Still hoping to add every piece to my wardrobe.

Fashion News – September 1, 2011

Kardashian Lingerie

  • I’m not quite sure how this happened, but esteemed photographer Annie Leibovitz is now shooting Sears catalogs. Not just any Sears catalog, but a “Kardashian Kollection” catalog. For a woman who has taken some truly iconic photographs (Johnny Depp and Kate Moss on the bedsheets, anyone?), this is one of the worst Photoshop jobs I’ve ever seen. Though Khloe Kardashian is 8 inches taller than her 5ft 2inch-tall sisters, Kim and Kourtney, her proportions are almost identical in the image. Not only that, but Kim’s copied and pasted physique is in completely different lighting to the others. Fakery on this scale is only going to have a negative impact on sales; you just have no visual reference to what you’re really buying.
  • According to his lawyer, John Galliano won’t be in court when the verdict in his anti-semitic rant case is handed down on Thursday, September 8th.
  • “Move over brick and mortar expansion tactics, retailers are finally realizing that bottom line growth isn’t always going to come by swelling square footage. Zara and H&M are taking their fast fashion competition online, while Urban Outfitters is jumping into F-commerce (making their Facebook fan page shoppable).”
  • One of my favourite British footwear designers, Nicholas Kirkwood, is set to open a 1,500-square-foot store – his first in the U S of A – at 807 Washington Street in early 2012.
  • How Dianna Agron Lost 20 Pounds

    Dianna Agron Cosmopolitan
Though the tone of my blog is forcefully optimistic, sometimes the What The Hell Flag needs to be raised. Upon seeing the image above, I had to question the motives for Cosmopolitan to so bizarrely Photoshop the beautiful body of Glee star Dianna Agron.

Their September cover shows the naturally stunning actress with a dramatically reduced waist, shrunken left hand, twigged-out arms, and harshly shadowed decolletage. Has Photoshop become such a normality that the media is now chopping, manipulating, and shading to a point of…ugly?

I get the need for polish in post-production as it can add to an artistic image, or correct lighting/’blemishes’ that would detract from the photo. This, however, is just art departments unnecessarily taking twenty pounds off of their cover stars. Is it expected? Is it asked of them? Where does photo editing cross the line into fakery?

Below, the body of Dianna Agron has been left as it is naturally. Gorgeous. Healthy. A body I would have no qualms seeing on the cover of any magazine. Would you?

(She also just dyed her hair pink!)

    New Breed of Magazine Cover

Can I get an Amen from the anti-Photoshop brigades? Glamour has just released the very first talking magazine cover for their June 2011 issue. The covers features actress Olivia Wilde and effortlessly marks the growing relationship between the era of the iPad and the fashion industry. Get it.

    Leighton Meester Times Trois

    Leighton Meester Lovestruck
Yes! Leighton Meester is back on the style circuit. Above, we have the official ad for Vera Wang’s “Lovestruck” fragrance – shot by Carter Smith – which Leighton is the spokesmodel for. The ad is a little bit Pretty Woman and unnecessarily Photoshopped, though brush off-able. C’mon, it’s Leighton.
    Leighton Meester Lovestruck Event
For the fragrance launch, Meester wore a Vera Wang Pre-Spring 2011 top and pants, Roger Vivier shoes, and Cathy Waterman jewellery.
    Leighton Meester Vera Wang
Later on, she joined Vera Wang to light up the Empire State Building. The landmark was illuminated in red and white to raise awareness about DKMS, the world’s largest bone marrow donor center. With ombre hair, Leighton paired a beige Vera Wang Fall/Winter 2011 sleeveless top with a body-lengthening Vera Wang Spring/Summer 2011 floral print skirt. Toffee-coloured Brian Atwood “Debra” slingbacks completed her outfit.
    Leighton Meester DKMS Gala
FINALLY – yes, this is all in one day – she attended the DKMS Gala in a Vera Wang Pre-Fall 2011 dress, Cathy Waterman Diamond Leaf Drop Earrings, and the same Brian Atwood heels. Let’s hope she had today off.
