Confidence is a funny thing. Funny…and always on my mind. Yesterday, I noticed that in a list of about 10 things I “take in” upon meeting people, I make a point to become conscious of how confident someone else is feeling. I can only assume I’ve been doing this for years, as I tend to overcompensate with friendliness if I can sense someone feels self-conscious. Contrary to what you may expect, confidence is just as rare in the fashion and beauty industry as it is anywhere else. It got me thinking about my own level of confidence. The growth of it, to be exact. At 22, I have been told I possess a level of confidence (or a self-assured demeanor) that is few and far between. A confidence that allowed me to move internationally multiple times, pitch to some of the biggest companies in the world, be comfortable when I ‘stand alone’, etcetera. Four years ago, I wasn’t like this. Let me take you back to high school. Kind of. As a precursor to this story, I have to explain that due to a few traumatic personal problems, I put in some urgent and hard work to graduate with a Honors diploma...

Though I’m not going to be pulling out my overalls or elasticated jeans anytime soon, I love to unleash my inner child out on my dress sense every one in a while. Statement sweaters are a particular favourite for this look. If you want to play around with colour, fun, but still keep it ‘casual cool’, I suggest linking one colour theme through some well-designed pieces. For example, the colour turquoise features (above) in the earrings, bag, shoes, and even the puppy’s eyes. Childlike chic.
Does anyone remember, last year, when Aerin Lauder left her position as the senior vice president and creative director of Estée Lauder (her grandmother’s company)? I remember thinking the woman was insane. In actuality, little Lauder seems to be making some incredible progression already! As she continues to work on her home furnishings and fashion business, Aerin, she has let Architectural Digest get a peek inside her Jacques Grange-designed office on 57th Street and Madison Avenue in midtown Manhattan. I’m not sure I could be any green-er with envy. (That Baguès chandelier! UGH!) I think my home office has a way to go…

Because I didn’t have a schedule fit to attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2012, I thought my reviews of the Fashion Week weren’t going to be worth putting on the blog. That is, until Romance Was Born unveiled their Spring/Summer collection in collaboration with MARVEL. (Yes, I’m a comic nerd). As the show that kicked off Australia’s Fashion Week, this collaboration couldn’t have been any more ballsy. Romance Was Born sent their superhero-splashed models out against a paper-pop up set worthy of The Avengers. The collection – “Berserkergang” (a state of unbeatable warrior power) – rocked a graphic artist appeal and even incorporated Jack Kirby’s famous dot technique and the process of CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow Key) printing. One half of Romance Was Born, Anna Plunkett, said, “having access to such incredible graphic archives has been so exciting. The MARVEL group has been really supportive in helping us reach our creative vision. It’s been a terrific process seeing the collection come to life, and a real privilege to work with such an incredible respected and creative company!” (Photography c/o Lucas Dawson – www.lucasdawson.com.
I have come across a new pill with big promises, ladies and gentleladies. Meet Colladeen Visage – a supplement that promises to reduce wrinkles, improve elasticity and even provide an internal SPF of 10 (yes, by swallowing a pill). Now, I am pretty strict with my skincare regime, so I’m not going to claim this is a miracle ‘after’ photo you’re seeing. The photo above is a hi-res snap of my face after washing it. (Excuse the leftover flakey mascara and yellow tint from my ceiling light, I wanted it to be completely unedited). I may not have been covered in wrinkles or blemishes beforehand, but before I started taking Colladeen Visage, my rosacea-pronce face never looked this calm, smooth, and bright post-wash. So, on the surface, it is anti-ageing and SPF in a pill. When I dug a little deeper, I realised it was doing a lot more. Containing only plant-sourced ingredients, Super Skinheroes like anthocyanadins and carotenoid lutein (the properties that protect plants from sun damage) work overtime, even helping to reduce water retention and spider veins. At only £18.95 for 60 tablets (which will last you a month), this one is added to my monthly must-haves.

When it comes to designing shoes, especially your perfect pair, I wouldn’t blame you for thinking the cost would be astronomical. That is, unless you are blessed with Louboutin-esque talent and resources. Which – let’s face it – is unlikely. Lo and behold, I recently stumbled on a company called Shoes of Prey who let you design your own pair of shoes for less than the cost of a Giuseppe Z or Jimmy C. Yep – that’s where the shoes (above and below) came from, and I couldn’t be happier. With a 4 1/2-inch silver glitter block heel and base woven underneath cream-coloured snake skin, I finally have my dream shoe. Post-creation, it took about two weeks to receive the heels and they arrived alongside comfortable shoe inserts, a shoe bag, and a sleek black shoe box. The attention to customer service went as far as a red wax seal stamped with the silhouette of a shoe. When it comes to wedding shoes, prom shoes, or simply treating yourself to ‘dream shoes’ (from stilettos to oxfords!), Shoes of Prey is an incredible service.
