I try to give her the benefit of the doubt, but even in the world of celebrity Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen is starting to push it.
Permanently dressed in cast-offs from the Lady Marmalade video, the sixteen year old’s image causes constant uproar, and not in the enticing way Cherry Bomb Cherie Currie’s did back in the day. What we have a case of here is a girl who seems to feel much more ‘adult’ than she is.
In a recent interview with Disorder she spoke about her new record saying, “…it confronts issues and goes, here’s what fucking sucks about everything and I don’t’ really know how to fix it but I’m fucking dying and I’ll sing about it. It covers all the bases of life — love, death, sex, religious, politics, murder, hate drugs.” The interviewer wrote, “She also grins when asked if she’s single, and replies that she is, that she’s not into guys, waits a beat, then adds she’s not gay but just bored of men and her best friend is her vibrator.”
When is it that we will stop approving of letting these exploited girls walk around wearing prosti-tot lucite heels with platforms for ‘tips’? While I’m all for the non-wholesome image, bordello wear is pushing it too far when you have millions of young, impressionable females watching your every ‘outfit’ with expected envy.
She’s a gorgeous girl with a naturally beautiful voice, and her band The Pretty Reckless is a great pop/grunge contender of recent years. Let’s hope this is all just a phase.
Eyebrows were raised in MAC‘s general direction when they announced that their Mexican-inspired collection designed with Rodarte would feature a nail polish named “Juarez”. Why? It’s one of the most dangerous cities in the world and notorious for the rapes and killings of women in the city to be ignored by police.
MAC have responded by saying:
“We understand that product names in the M·A·C Rodarte collection have offended some of our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry. We are listening carefully to the comments posted and are grateful to those of you who have brought your concerns to the forefront of our attention. M·A·C will give a portion of the proceeds from the M·A·C Rodarte collection to help those in need in Juarez. We are diligently investigating the best way to do this. Please be assured that we will keep you posted on the details regarding our efforts.”
Turning an uh-oh into an oh-yes? The collection is beautiful and MAC are doing a great thing. I’d say so!
Hamish Bowles with Grace Coddington and Anna Wintour at Ralph Lauren Collection FW 2010/11
Like I expected, the upcoming season of Gossip Girl is shaping up quite well.
Every New Yorker is dying with excitement over Vogue’s big shopping event on September 10th, Fashion’s Night Out. Why? Invitations are elite, and it’s basically a city-wide shopping party thrown by Anna Wintour. This year, in addition to CBS’ one-hour special featuring parties and live performances at stores around town, the CW will include Fashion’s Night Out as a plot point in two episodes of Gossip Girl airing in September.
Here’s the kicker, Vogue editors Hamish Bowles (the love of my life) and Lauren Santo Domingo filmed cameos yesterday in scenes where they prepare for the merchandising madness. Insane!
As a make-up artist, the number one request I receive – I’m talking 95% of the time – is a smoky eye. Truth is, it’s one of the simplest things you can do for your eyes and since you’re trying to look smoky, you can do it quick and not worry about precision.
What will you need? – A dark and light brown eyeshadow. – A white/cream eyeshadow. – Black eyeliner (I prefer liquid).
Brushes aren’t necessary, but any blending brush would be helpful.
The Easy Directions:
1. Highlight your inner corner and brow bone with the light colour.
2. Blend lighter brown eyeshadow in from the outer corner of your eye.
3. Bring the same colour underneath your eye softly.
4. BLEND your harsh edges (aka smoke it out).
5. Work darker colour into your natural crease.
6. Bring that colour underneath your eye softly.
7. Line your eyes with a small wing. It’ll increase the depth of the smoke.
8. Highlight and blend back in.
Simple. Five minute smoky eye. Looks gorgeous on everyone. Obviously, the video above will assist you and also features music by the Audiovisuals. Must watch (in HD)!
Most magazine-reading US girls aged 14-34 have at least one item from Forever 21. Their cheap-as-chips clothes are the most fashion-forward in the malls of America, and they are about to get that bit more trendy.
Following in the savvy footsteps of stores like H&M and Target, they are collaborating with the now designer Brian Lichtenberg who has recently been filling celebrity’s wardrobes with asymetrics, bodycons, sequins and more*. What we know is that 9 pieces will be retailing at $14.80 starting August 13th. I blindly want them all.
* Ahem, designer of Lady Gaga‘s caution tape outfit in Telephone, hello.
