V Magazine Lets Go Cruising

Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Lindsey Wixson

V Magazine has put quite a smile on my little fashion face, today. For their latest issue – on stands November 8th – they have used actual models! Four covers worth! For the first time in two years!

Obviously, this kind of decision – after two years of celebrity covers – wasn’t going to take place without tagging some big names onto the shoot; infamous photographer Terry Richardson was on lens, while styling was handled by Carine Roitfeld. Each cover duo was brilliantly chosen, and included six of my current favourite models – Candice Swanepoel and Joan Smalls; Daphne Groeneveld and Saskia de Brauw; Sui He and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, and Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Lindsey Wixson.

“These eight girls are unique, not one is like the other. Candice is the only blonde and blue-eyed of this new generation of supermodels. Joan is black, Sui He is Asian, Hanna is North African. It’s their diversity that makes each of them, to me, truly modern. They bring a new energy to fashion. […] It’s a big moment of change in fashion. In some cases, you feel like it’s the end of an era. I have been feeling this with cover subjects, and especially models.”

Fashion Week benches

  • The benches broke at Balenciaga‘s show for Spring/Summer 2012 at Paris Fashion Week, leaving Anna Wintour and many other attendees to partake in an unintentional standing ovation.

  • Former editrix of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld, is set to launch her own magazine! In an interview for Dazed & Confused, she expressed hopes to launch a “really iconic magazine that’s fresh and exciting” which won’t be monthly but will be printed in English. The debut issue is penned to launch for September 2012.

  • In crazy-English-people news, Liverpool-born fashion designer Rachel Freire has caused many people to clutch their pearls by making a rosette-looking dress composed of 3,000 protruding cow nipples. As you may assume, animal-rights groups aren’t at all pleased.

  • Andrej Pejic has been invited to meet The Queen. He is part of an Australian and fashion-filled group that will attend a reception at Buckingham Palace.

  • Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux recently had a photo set taken by Terry Richardson. Engagement photos? Not confirmed, but the tabloids will surely say so!

  • Emmy winner Melissa McCarthy, of Gilmore Girls and Bridesmaids fame, recently told the Hollywood Reporter that after designing her own Emmy gown in collaboration dressmaker Daniella Pearl, she plans to launch an entire line for plus-size women.

“Trying to find stuff that’s still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible. It’s either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle.”

  • Nicola Formichetti‘s show for Mugler opened with a short film of Lady Gaga by Inez & Vinoodh. In the video, below, Mother Monster shows the audience her buck teeth and suggests that you “don’t fuck with me” and “don’t fuck with Mugler.” The Wall Street Journal’s Christina Binkley tweeted, “I have rarely seen so many pissed off people rush out of a fashion show. Mugler. #pfw No new trends there” in response.

I am in awe of Carine Roitfeld. Though I’m over 30 years behind her in age, the woman embodies everything I want to do and become. After leaving her well-deserved position as Editor in Chief of French Vogue, she has been scouring the globe and sharing her creative vision everywhere that matters in the industry. Now, to coincide with a wonderful feature of her in W Magazine‘s October 2011 issue, she has revealed this photo shoot. Not only is the 57-year-old Wonderwoman the model, but she selected and styled the pieces, as well. Get her a DSLR and some make-up, someone; every shoot could be a one-woman production. (Though, hey, Paolo Roversi is an exceptional second choice for photographer!) View Post

Yes, that is in fact former editor of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld, looking fierce on the cover of i-D magazine‘s Fall 2011 issue. There aren’t many other people in the fashion industry that would make more sense next to the “Dream Big” tagline, are there? The cover was captured by everyone’s most controversial big dreamer, Terry Richardson. The issue will hit newsstands in four days (September 21st).

    Chanel Fall Winter 2011
PSH! First I post a Best of Tumblr dedicated to photobooths and then Karl Lagerfeld decides to shoot Freja Beha Erichsen in a photobooth for his Fall/Winter 2011 Chanel campaign? COINCIDENCE? Well, yes. I must say, it feels pretty good to have the same direction/appreciation as the photoshoot’s stylist – and my personal hero – Carine Roitfeld. View Post
