Marketing Genius of Express Bags

Fashion retailer Express have a very, very bon marketing department. For the past few seasons they have been propelling the trend of public fashion shows – in New York, Miami and Las Vegas – and are now taking things a step further.

They are casting you as a model. This coming Saturday (the 23rd of July), Express are inviting anyone who can get to Times Square (NYC) between the hours of 9-6 to walk on their public runway. No height, weight, or any other requirements. Guinness Book of World Records representatives will be there as they attempt to break the world record for most people to walk a catwalk.

Currently, the record is held by Galeries Lafayette, who have had 521 people walk down their runway. I hope some Lela London readers can make it and break the record with them! Express will also be holding an actual runway show at 9pm that same evening to showcase (and simultaneously shoot the lookbook for) their holiday collection. Fun for all!

Let’s get straight past the crazy: the industry is gearing up for a Lifetime movie, right? Was I unaware we were involved in some Shakespearean method acting? This has been one of the most bizarre fashion weeks to date. See below:

  • John Galliano (rightly) accepted personal responsibility for his actions.
    – Fired (replacement: Alessandra Facchinetti FTW).
    – Got kicked out of his attempt to appear at Dior.
  • Christophe Decarnin (the designer) was absent for Balmain’s A/W 2011 runway show.
    – Insiders say that he has actually been in a mental hospital since mid-January.
    – Apparently the in-house design team and stylist Melanie Ward (who replaced Emmanuelle Alt after she stepped down to focus on her new role as editor in chief of Vogue Paris) designed it all.
    Balmain say he’s been snoozing.
  • Jean Paul Gaultier PFW Runway Beth Ditto
Jean Paul Gaultier decided to welcome us to the twenty-first century for Paris Fashion Week by kitting out his attendees with 3-dimensional glasses to compliment his 3D prints. This is the Avatar of Fashion World. With a collection of spage-age androgyny, models of all sizes – Crystal Renn, Marquita Pring and Beth Ditto for the plus-size department – wore Ziggy Stardust inspired wigs and were ‘deconstructed’ from head to toe in that snappy Gaultier way. Leighton Meester at Fashions Night Out The Show
My favourite outfit from the Fashion’s Night Out runway show was worn by Leighton Meester. The girl has proverbial balls. She wore a Versus Fall/Winter 2010.11 RTW Blue Dress, the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2010 Studded Minaudière Trésor Clutch, and Christian Louboutin Venus Booties. Until now, I was on the fence regarding the Venuses but they photographed beautifully.
