casablanca hotel
Day Four, my lovelies, marks the final day of the Manhattan liason! Quel horreur.

To be honest, the Hotel Casablanca both thrilled and intimidated me. The Thrill: the hotel was inspired by the romance of the movie “Casablanca” (they even have a Rick’s Cafe!) and boasted top-to-tail glamour and hospitality. The Intimidation: it is located smack dab in the middle of Times Square, and while the ‘Center of The Universe’ has a lot to offer, I wasn’t sure it was somewhere I wanted to rest my head at night.

It took me all of two minutes to change my mind. Once settled into our Premium King room, Times Square seemed islands away. With a hotel I knew I would be happy to escape to, I took a few steps outside and enjoyed the best of a tourist’s Manhattan, The Theater District, Times Square, MOMA, Radio City Music Hall, and more…

You couldn’t find any other hotel with a more convenient “New York” boutique experience.

Day Three of The Hotel Tour of New York and the photos say it all, really. The Hotel Elysee wins the trophy for Best Hotel In The World.

Just steps from the fictional offices of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (remember, I love Mad Men), the Presidential Suite met all of my wildest New York fantasies. With a baby grand piano on one end, the living room alone had been more spacious than any hotel room I have been in for years. To boot, the suite was an interior design love fest which featured a fully equipped kitchen, fireplace, a party-friendly dining table, and a bedroom terrace looking out onto 54th Street.

And that is just the hotel room. The Hotel Elysee is home to the world-renowned Monkey Bar, and just around the corner you will have quick access to 5th Avenue (aka shopper’s paradise; Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co, etc) and Central Park. I plan to live here.

library hotel new york
Day Two of my HK Hotels extravaganza was spent at The Library Hotel; a hotel I consider the Manhattan Ultimate for intellectuals and fashionistas alike. Roughly a 60-second stroll from the gargantuan New York Public Library (and therefore Bryant Park, and therefore New York Fashion Week), The Library would check all of any 20-something’s boxes.

20-somethings to 60-somethings, in fact, as this hotel has all the qualities of a private member’s club with the most unbelievably welcoming feel. The customer service team – especially Billy at the front desk – was one of unparalleled excellence. One that obviously thinks of The Library as more than a job. One that always noted ‘the little things’. One that made sure I stayed in the (ever-appropriate) Journalism Room.

TripAdvisor had even selected the Library Hotel as winner of The Best Luxury Hotel in The United States. Travel bugs alike know that TripAdvisor is the Hotelier God. You just don’t second guess Hotelier God.

Another blog, another episode of Lela’s apparent insanity. Let me just put it out there: on my last four nights in New York, I stayed in four different hotels.

What better way to challenge yourself to explore different parts of a city, right? We all know that trap of ‘comfort’ in wandering solely around the square mile your hotel is located. Hotel one-night-stands (in the non-traditional sense) are a fantastic way to ensure you utilize as many opportunities and locations as possible while travelling.

So, where did I stay? All four of HK Hotels! (The extras* say it all). Night One was the Hotel Giraffe. The hotel itself was designed to celebrate the architecture of the Art Moderne period which has distinguished the vibrant Manhattan Eastside neighborhood since the 1920s and ’30s. The room – the Terrace One Bedroom Suite – was lovely; a small balcony, separate bedroom, bathroom, and living room, the most incredibly cosy bed…swoon. No wonder it has won Citysearch awards for “Best Boutique Hotel” and “Best Family Friendly Hotel”. Also, it is located at 365 Park Avenue South at 26th Street, which gives you access to everything in Midtown without being overcrowded.

I particularly loved The Rooftop Garden (pictured below), the proximity to Union Square (the people call it RAGTIME!), and the fact that it was absolutely surrounded with amazing (yet affordable, by New York standards) food hotspots.
