bread and butter berlin
As you may have seen from my incessant tweeting, I recently returned from one of the hautest trade shows this side of the Atlantic: Bread and Butter Berlin.

I have been to a few trade shows before, but this one trumped the others on size alone. Bread and Butter – I have to Google why it’s called that – takes over Berlin’s Airport Tempelhof. From baggage carousels to passport control to the runways themselves, international brands set up stalls to impress womenswear and menswear buyers from around the world. And impress they did. I can only imagine the orders that these brands manage to win in just a few days. (Millions? Yes, millions.)

As well as hanging out at Havaianas‘ amazing beach stall (the purpose of my trip – but more on that later!), I browsed hundreds of Spring/Summer 2013 delights. Some of my favourite set ups included George, Gina & Lucy’s pills (candy)/neon signs (below)/lip tattoos, Karl Lagerfeld’s “Lagerfeld” collection (come on, it’s Uncle Karl), Desigual’s printed skirts (and – ahem – Veuve Clicquot cocktails), Black Widow’s jackets (I could wear everything – impeccable), Supertrash (you could build a full wardrobe from their collection), Mavi’s denim kitchen (where they were hand-dying), horse dressage (I kid you not) at Polo Team, and more.

There was a LOT to be seen and I had the most wonderful time.

About half my designs are controlled fantasy, 15 percent are total madness, and the rest are bread-and-butter designs.

Lady Gaga Chanel Sketch
Last night, Lady Gaga cut the rope on “Gaga’s Workshop” at Barney’s New York. The lucky superstar even got Karl Lagerfeld to create a custom Chanel dress (and overall look) for the event.

What do we have here? White tweed with black trim, asymmetrical hemline, Chanel pearls, camelias and bows. Our beloved Stefani Germanotta paired the couture piece with black and gold studded platforms – as only she could do – and an intricate fascinator.

Karlie Kloss Vogue

Karlie Kloss

  • Wham! Bam! How gorgeous does Karlie Kloss look on the December 2011 cover of Vogue Germany? This, being released less than a week after she joined the Victoria’s Secret runway Angel Team, is capping off a wonderful year for the 18-year-old model.

  • As you may remember, Filipa Fino – longtime Vogue accessories editor – left the magazine in June, but left her reasons up to anyone’s opinion. Until now. On November 28th, she is releasing a 40-page holiday gift guide for Cyber Monday, and then following it up with a brand new free online accessories magazine called Fino File in February! Yay!

  • Karl Lagerfeld‘s master plan for economy recovery:

“I think they should make a tax so that when you earn a certain amount of money, you have to spend a certain amount on shopping. To buy whatever…and that way, we create tons of jobs. I think it’s a good idea. What I hate is people with a lot of money who don’t spend it.”

    Agreed.

  • Unfortunately, some terribly sad news – philanthropist and cosmetic-industry leader Evelyn Lauder has lost her battle with ovarian cancer. My thoughts are with her friends and family.

  • Gianfranco Ferré have finally (officially) replaced designers Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi (who left the brand in April) with Stefano Citron and Federico Piaggi – the pair of “unknowns” who produced Ferre’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

  • On Friday, thirty-one-year-old Julia Restoin-Roitfeld announced that her and her boyfriend, Robert Konjic, are expecting! (Via Facebook, of all places). This means Carine Roitfeld, in a short six months, will become the hottest grandmother alive.

  • The Hunger Games trailer has been released! From a fashion point of view (because the story speaks for itself), I could not be more excited to see my beloved Lenny Kravitz as Katniss Everdeen’s stylist (sneak peak below).

  • Jenna Lyons Courtney Crangi

    • Earlier in the week, The Post reported a rumor earlier this week that J.Crew president Jenna Lyons wold be divorcing artist Vincent Mazeau as she “has fallen in love with another woman who also works in the fashion business“. Insiders have since revealed said woman to be Courtney Crangi, the sister-slash-business partner of jewelry designer Philip Crangi.

“After the breakup, Jenna fell in love with Courtney, whom she had been friends with for some time. They’ve known each other for years through the fashion business. Courtney is an attractive blonde who balances working hard with her family.”

    • Karl Lagerfeld has tapped Carine Roitfeld to style Chanel‘s upcoming campaign for Spring/Summer 2012! According to Uncle Karl, the shoot is “all about athletics and the sea…it’s very modern sportif and in black-and-white”.
    • Former reality TV star/author/fashion designer/(I’ve missed something, I’m sure) Lauren Conrad has decided to follow her latest venture, beauty blog thebeautydepartment.com, with a beauty book. The appropriately named tome – “Lauren Conrad Beauty” – is sure to be a huge hit.
    • TV chef Paula Deen is said to be cooking up a clothing line (pun intended). You know what they say, after butter-flavored lip balm comes couture.
    • At its biannual board meeting this week, the CFDA elected award-winners Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler‘s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez to join their board! Congratulations, boys! At the same time, Nicole Miller, John Bartlett, and Richard Lambertson all left the board.
    • Rumours are a-spinning that Gisele may have shot Givenchy‘s latest campaign, which would mark the first time since Fall/Winter 2007 that Mariacarla Boscono wouldn’t front a Givenchy campaign. After closing their Spring/Summer 2012 show and male model Noah Mills tweeting that he would be “going to jamaica tomorrow to shoot with Gisele”, it seems to almost be a certainty.
    • Next year, your dreams will come true. If you’re a crazed fan of America’s Next Top Model, at least, as the Tyra Banks-fronted reality show is finally (sarcasm) getting a branded fragrance, “Dream Come True“. The fragrance launch will be exclusive to Target next year and will feature the winner of the show’s All-Star Cycle (currently showing) as the face of the campaign.

At the Q Awards, beautiful songstress Lana Del Rey was the recipient of the “Next Big Thing” award (which she is). Not super-fashiony news, I know, but LOOK at her Prabal Gurung Resort 2012 floral print dress! Dead. The white brogues add that perfect touch.

  • If you are at all aware of fashion on Twitter, you probably follow DKNY PR Girl. Though the ‘Twitter celebrity’ has kept her identity a secret (making us all woner, “Who is @DKNY?“), she has actually quietly revealed all!

Say hello to Aliza Licht, the Senior Vice President of Global Communications at Donna Karan International (via her video posted to Tumblr).

  • Karl Lagerfeld is launching a new line with Net-a-Porter! Seriously, when does he sleep? For a January 25th release date, the genius designer is creating “Karl“; a 100-piece women’s collection based heavily on denim and leather. A mens collection will follow for Autumn/Winter 2012.

Founder and executive chairman of Net-a-Porter, Natalie Massenet, said

“We believe in this collection based on Karl’s talent, his global appeal and the product itself. It’s a very strong, well-edited collection with a great mix of street attitude and timeless chic. It also is an entire wardrobe that mixes and matches well with itself.”

  • At Teen Vogue‘s “Fashion U” classes this past weekend, over 30 fashion industry heavyweights gave their guidance and regaled stories to a large group of young, wannabe name-to-knows. One very poignant note from the weekend? Proenza Schouler now “care less about what the critics [have to say] and more about the kids on blogs … their responses are pure, and instinctual”.

  • Up until now, my perfume collection has only consisted of spray fragrances or solid bar fragrances. Not too far from now, it may include “Swallowable Parfum“: a cosmetic tablet/pill (literally) that enables human skin to emit a genetically unique scent about who we are and how we perform our identities. Basically turning our skin into an atomizer.

I can’t lie…I really want to try this. Would you?
